  • Obituary Image - JOLLY, Joan Deborah (Deb), Reg. No. 1744

JOLLY, Joan Deborah (Deb), Reg. No. 1744

    SERVING EPS MEMBER HAS PASSED:

    JOLLY,
    Joan Deborah “Debbie” March 31, 1962 - May 15, 2020 Reg. No. 1744

Joan Deborah (Deb) Jolly, age 58, of Edmonton, Alberta, passed away on Friday May 15, 2020 after a 4 month illness. Debbie is survived by her big sister; Kim (Bern) Miles and husband; Frank, and by brother; David and his partner; Howard. Debbie is predeceased by her father; Peter Jolly, mother; Kay Jolly (Boland).

Debbie led a storied life, certainly a life of consequence. A proud member of the Edmonton Police service for over 30 Years, Deb can count among her achievements, United Nations Peace Keeper in East Timor, researcher of the Restorative Justice courts in Rwanda following the genocide, and working tirelessly to earn a graduate degree at Royal Roads University at the same time. Deb was born in the original Edmonton, in London, England. At age 4 her family immigrated to Canada. After living a year in Montreal, the family settled in Edmonton, Alberta. Throughout her years, Debbie would find her outlet in sport and athletics. After graduating from Ross Sheppard High School, Debbie would spend many years working for Wardair Airlines. As her siblings we were endlessly envious of Deb’s weekend trips to London’s Westend or a sunny beach at Waikiki. But fate intervenes as it will. Following a break-in at our house, the investigating officer was so impressed with Deb’s statement that he invited Deb to apply to EPS. The rest of the story, filled with challenge, heartbreak, friendship, and success, is as they say, history. Moreover, Debbie was to her parents and siblings a loyal, caring and devoted person. This
cannot be understated, and we are forever grateful to have had you in our lives. We shall save a place at the dinner table or in front of the fire. Following Debbie’s wishes, there will be no service in the immediate future. However, if in future we may safely come together, we will hold a memorial for Deb.
Should you wish to make a donation in memory of Debbie Jolly, please consider the Edmonton Humane Society or the Youth Emergency Shelter Society of Edmonton.

Debbie Jolly became a member of the EPS on August 20th, 1990 when she joined RTC #78. Her first 5 years were spent in West Division Patrol. Later assignments were to Police Selection/Employment Unit and Downtown Division Patrol from where she also did a stint in Vice Detail. She was promoted to Sergeant in Downtown Division. In 2003/4 she subsequently volunteered for a United Nations Police Keeping Mission in East Timor. After her Peacekeeping experience she changed rank to Detective in Sexual Assault Section. In 2006, Deb took a leave without pay. She was later assigned to Arrest Processing Unit and from there was promoted to Staff Sergeant in Southeast Division. Later assignments included Sexual Assault Section and IMAC Branch where she was promoted to Inspector in 2012. Promotion to Superintendent in Southeast Division came in 2014 and she later moved to Criminal Investigations Division. Debbie was Chief of Staff in the Office at the time of her passing on May 15th, 2020.
