  • Obituary Image - BARKER, Murray J., Reg. No. 428

BARKER, Murray J., Reg. No. 428

After a courageous and painful 20+ years battle with Multiple Sclerosis, Murray James Barker of St. Albert passed away in the late evening on May 18, 2018 at the age of 72 years. His memory will be carried on through his wife Arlene of 50 years, who was his first love, his son Gregory (Beverley) Barker, his daughter Cheryl (Heath) Murdock, his six grandchildren, Jessica, Jillian, Meaghan, Nathan, Ryley and Shaelynn, his sister Janet (Gerald) Lepper, his brother Kim (Linda) Barker, other relatives, and friends and acquaintances who had the honor to know him. Murray was predeceased by his loving parents, Neville and Barbara Barker.

Murray was a dedicated Police Officer with the Edmonton Police Service for 35 years, reaching Superintendent before he would have to retire due to his diagnosis. He worked for the Canadian Corps of Commissioners for 3 years after his retirement as well. His early retirement didn't stop him from being part of the community and giving back to it. Murray became involved in the Youth Justice Committee and was a youth mentor volunteering his time, and impacting youth of St. Albert. He would also volunteer for the Salvation Army during the Christmas season, and he also served on several committees, such as the Handibus Advisory Committee, and took pictures for the St. Albert Senior Centre. Photography was one of his passions that influenced his life and through him many others. For those who knew Murray, you would always see him at the St. Albert Farmers Market with the biggest smile on his face. Murray was the most approachable and kind person, a stranger could start a conversation with him and be touched by his presence. Murray was the purest soul; a literal ray of sunshine. He influenced every life he came into contact with, from his wise words, funny sense of humour, his kind and pure heart, love of nature, and his diverse love of music. His friendship and stories meant the world to his family and friends. Upon many family members talking, we all described him as our hero and best friend.

Murray would want you to be happy when you think of him. He would want you to imagine him riding his Goldwing, free from pain. His memory should inspire you to touch the lives of anyone you can, anyway you can, exactly like he did. He always had time for everyone. Although this is a challenging time for his family, know we are finding comfort in the fact that he is no longer suffering.

A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice, or consider giving back to your community, like Murray did. To send condolences, please visit www.connelly-mckinley.com.
