    Fred Allen September 16, 1931 - November 30, 2016

    We, as a family, are very sorry to announce the passing of Fred, a husband, father and grandfather. He leaves to mourn his wife, Joyce( of 60 years), sons Jeffrey (Cathy), Jim (Monica), Bill (Heather) and David ( Rosanne). Four granddaughters, Sarah Allen (Colby), Courtney Allen, Bobbi Allen (Ian) and Malissa Shires (Curtis). One Grandson Tyler Allen. One brother Bill Allen and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother and father, William and Catherine Allen, sisters Pearl & Ruth, brothers Tom & George.

    Fred was a very proud member of the Edmonton Police Service for 34 years and moved on to enjoy retirement at his second home in Mesa.

    Thank you to the staff at the Norwood and Grey Nuns hospitals.

    A private family interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers please make donation to the charity of your choice.

    Fred Allen became a member of the Edmonton Police Department on July 13th, 1953 and was assigned to Patrol Division that same day. Recruit Training Classes were a thing of the future. Later assignments included Traffic Division and Case Supervisors Unit. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1961 and worked Traffic and Patrol. Promotion to Staff Sergeant came in 1970 with assignments to Criminal Investigation Division (C.I.D.) and Court and Gaol Division. Fred was in Patrol in 1975 when he was promoted to Inspector moving back to Traffic Division and later to C.I.D. Promotion to Superintendent came in 1981 and before he retired on April 15th, 1986 he had managed B, C and D Patrol Divisions as well as a stint in Support Division.

    WARRING, Richard - August 9, 1939 – November 13, 2016

    It is with deep sadness and much love that the family of Richard Warring announces his passing on November 13, 2016, at the age of 77 years. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Maureen; daughter, Dawn Carver: grandsons, Jason (Danielle) Carver, and Cody Carver; son, Richard (Lidiya): granddaughters, Sofia, and Adriana; sisters, Bobbi McLaughlin, and Louise (Jim) Miobo; and numerous nieces and nephews. Richard was a member of EPS for 35 years. His passions were country mus ic, guitars, and his puppy, Lady.

    At Richard's request, there will be no service. A Private Interment will take place at St. Albert Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Richard's name may be made to the Zebra Foundation.

    Richard Warring became a member of the Edmonton Police Department as a member of Recruit Training Class #15 on September 11th, 1961. During his career he had assignments to Patrol Division, Patrol Administration, Traffic Division, Traffic Safety Section, Special Operations Division, Communications Division, File Control Unit, CPIC Warrant Unit. Rick spent his last 3 ½ years assigned to the museum until he retired on January 12th, 1990. When he retired his Reg. No. was 237.

    On Monday, November 7, 2016, Hugh Frey of Edmonton passed away at the age of 73 years. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Arlene of 49 years, children; Marcia, Rod (Heather), and Nyssa (Blair), 7 grandchildren, 3 sisters, and many other family and friends. A cremation has taken place and a Funeral Mass was held on November 10th in Edmonton. To send condolences, please visit www.connelly-mckinley.com .

    The following is from Hugh’s funeral card: “Hugh was born to Valentine and Simone Frey at McLennan, AB. He was the fifth of six children.(Helene,Florence(deceased 2007),Mimi, Clement(deceased 1941) and Claudette). In 1967, Hugh married his love, Arlene, and they were blessed with three children (Marcia, Rod and Nyssa). During this time, endless weekends were spent at the cabin at Baptiste Lake and establishing a home in Namao, AB. After the children left the nest, Hugh and Arlene moved into Edmonton. They travelled to many exotic locales and had numerous travel adventures with family and friends. Hugh retired from the police force and started doing handyman jobs for others. During this time, he was also blessed with 7 grandchildren (Luke, Leif, Meredith, Celeste, Piers, Ian and Rayna). For more than 30 years Hugh enjoyed a fulfilling career with the Edmonton Police Service. He always said there was never a dull day on the job. After retirement in 1997, Hugh followed his passion of working with his hands to help others. He was a humble, giving man with a superhuman work ethic often fueled by chocolate chip cookies. Rest easy Hugh, your work is done. You are loved and missed.”

    Hugh joined the Edmonton Police Department on May 12th, 1966. A member of Recruit Class #24 he was first assigned to Patrol Division and then had the obligatory assignments to Gaol Section and Court Section. In 1974, Hugh transferred to Task Force Section and was promoted from there to Drug Control Section as a Detective in 1978. He transferred to Technical Support Unit in 1983 and then, in 1991 moved to Integrated Intelligence Unit. When Hugh retired on April 11th, 1997 his Reg. No. was 374.

    It is with great sadness the family of Bernie Shukalek announces his sudden passing on July 22, 2016, at the age of 69. He is survived by his loving wife and friend of 41 years, Gloria; and children, Krista (Brad), Mathew (Jen), and Caley (Robert).

    One of his greatest joys in life were his five grandchildren; Colton, Makayla, Sloane, Carson and Sawyer. Bernie is survived by a large family of brothers, sisters, extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his mother, Mary; father, John; sister, Elaine; and brothers, Billy and Greg.

    A Celebration of his Life was held on Thursday, July 28th, 2016. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to STARS Air Ambulance or the Stollery Children's Hospital.

    Bernie Shukalek became a member of the Edmonton Police Department on March 18th, 1968 as a member of recruit Training Class #27. He started in Patrol Division and later had assignments in Communications Division, Hit & Run Unit, Personnel Section, Warrant & Document Service Unit, Traffic Court Unit, Crime Prevention Unit and ended his career with assignments in Patrol Divisions “C” and “B”. When Bernie retired on April 11th, 1997 his Reg. No. was 448

    McCLOSKEY, Daniel, Reg. No. 38

     

    It is with heavy hearts that the family of Daniel announces his passing on July 15, 2016. He will be forever in the heart of his loving wife, Jean. He also leaves to mourn, his daughter Jeanine, his grandson Cameron who was the light of his life and numerous family members and friends.

    Dan was born in Northern Ireland and spent his formative years in Glasgow, Scotland. He joined the Scots Guard and later joined the Glasgow Police Department. He was one of 12 Scottish police officers recruited by the Edmonton Police Department. Dan received many commendations during his career including an award for work publications in the Addictions field and a special award for Life Saving. He retired from the Edmonton Police Service in 1986 as inspector and was the last surviving member of his Glasgow recruitment cohort.

    Dan always lived life to the fullest and naturally enjoyed a very active retirement. Dan remained involved always as a volunteer in various capacities including hospital libraries and most especially as a longstanding board member in his condominium at Lemarchand Tower. Over the years Daniel touched many people's lives with his generosity, words of wisdom, support and love - a true tribute to his affable, good humored and warm personality. He had a permanent twinkle in his eyes and a joke on his tongue – a tribute possibly to his Irish- Scots heritage. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. The family would like to thank the doctors and all the staff at University of Alberta Hospital for their kindness, caring and incredible expertise through these recent years.

    In keeping with Dan's wishes, no formal funeral service will be held and cremation has already taken place. The family will be planning a celebration of Dan's life at a later date.     Daniel McCloskey became a member of the Edmonton Police department on March 6th, 1952. After his start in Patrol, he had assignments in Staffing Division and C.I.D. He was promoted to Detective in 1957 and later moved back to Patrol. Promotion to Staff Sergeant followed in 1966 and he had assignments to Crime Prevention/Internal Affairs, Patrol Division, GIS and CIS. Daniel was promoted to Inspector i/c Drug Control Section in 1979, later transferring to Court Section from where he retired on April 15th, 1986. At that time his Reg. No. was 38.

    A Celebration and Memorial Service was held for Harvey Schubert of Cold Lake at the Grand Center Alliance Church on July 17th, 2016. Donations in lieu of flowers may be given to the charity of one's choice.

    Harvey Schubert became a member of the Edmonton Police Department on March 23rd, 1965 as a member of Recruit Training Class #21 and retired on March 23rd, 1992 with Reg. No. 315. During his service Harvey had assignments in Patrol Division, Crime Index Unit, Case Supervisors Unit, Warrant & Document Service Unit, Court Section and spent the last 10 years of his service attached to “C” Division Patrol.

    Glen Harrington passed away peacefully at the age of 75 after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Glen is survived by his loving wife of 53 years and best friend, Sandra; sons: Daryl (Diane), and Murray (Susan Iskiw); grandchildren: Thomas, Jane, Max, Jillian, and Clarke.

    Glen was born in Regina, Saskatchewan while his father was serving overseas in World War II. They returned to West Vancouver in 1943 where he was raised with his siblings, Carol, Dennis (Patricia), Howard (Barb), Allan (Mary), Patrick (Judy), and Timothy (Jo- Ann). He moved to Edmonton and joined the Edmonton City Police Department in 1961 and met his future wife and life-long companion, Sandra. Glen attained the rank of Superintendent before retiring in 1997. Glen and Sandra enjoyed their retirement years travelling in their motorhome, fishing, camping, golfing, skiing, going to Vancouver Island and spending time with their grandchildren, family and many friends.

    A Celebration of Glen's life was held on June 30, 2016. The family would like to thank the staff at the Cross Cancer Institute, the Sturgeon Community Hospital and the Royal Alexandra Hospital for their tremendous care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, 11560 University Avenue NW, Edmonton, AB, T6G 9Z9.

    Glen joined the Edmonton Police Department on September 11th, 1961 as a member of RTC # 15. After about 5 years in Patrol Division, he transferred to Identification Section. He later moved back to Patrol then General Investigations Section where he promoted to detective in 1971. Transfers to Crimes Against Property, Auto Theft and CIS “A” followed. Glen was promoted to Staff Sergeant in Patrol “C” in 1981. He later transferred to Homicide Unit. Promotion to Inspector in Division “C” came in 1987. Other assignments as an Inspector included Support Division and Special Investigations Section. Glen was promoted to Superintendent in 1995 and his assignments included Special investigations Division and Operations Bureau. When he retired on April 11th, 1997 Glen’s Reg. No. was 239.

    We didn’t locate an obituary for Bill, however we know that Bill passed away after complications from oral cancer surgery. A funeral was held on Thursday, July 7th in Edmonton.

    Bill became a member of the Edmonton Police Department on July 26th, 1976 as a member of RTC #43. After starting in D Division, he transferred to Information & Reception Unit. Transfers over the rest of Bill’s career included: Warrant & Document Service, Arrest Approval section, Court Security Unit, Document Service Unit, File Assessment Unit, Court Security Unit, Detention Unit, Project OWE and CPIC Warrant Unit interspersed with returns to Downtown Division. When Bill retired on October 26th, 2001 his Reg. No. was 870.

    JAMES, Norman Valentine Born September 13, 1934 in Saskatoon, SK. Passed away May 16, 2016 in Westbank, BC

    Left to cherish memories are: his wife, Bernice; four children, Sherry (Fred) Cross, Barbara James, Jeffrey James, Joanne (Andy) Neumann; nine grandchildren, Carolyn (Ryan) Harrison, Lindsay (Oscar) Sanchez, Robert (Tina) Cross, Michael Gaboury, Matthew (Jessica) Gaboury, Jessica James, Evan James, Andrea Neumann and, Reid Neumann (Jen Christanson); four great grandchildren, Kaylee and Parker Harrison, Marco Sanchez and, Oliver Gaboury; two cousins, Cecil (Helen) Hopko and Gordon Hopko and their families, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nephews and nieces and, friends. He was predeceased by his first wife Jeannine, his parents Mary James and Dr. Norman Valentine James, Sr. and, his aunt Doris Hopko. Norm was a man who took his responsibilities seriously. He was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Both long time and new friends were much appreciated. As a thirty year veteran of the Edmonton Police Service, he never stopped being a proud part of that fraternity. In his leisure time he enjoyed music from folk to classical, as well as fishing, camping and travel. His interest in subjects from nature shows to boxing to sci-fi to current affairs made Norm a repository of a wide and varied range of information! Norm had a long and full life!

    A Celebration of Lifewas held on June 18, 2016 at Sherwood Park, Alberta

    Norm James became a member of the Edmonton Police Department on April 14th, 1958 and retired with Reg. No. 160, 30 years later on April 14th, 1988. Norm started his career as a member of RTC # 7. Like all of us, he moved into Patrol Division. He later transferred to Gaol Section, Traffic Safety Unit and Traffic Section. Norm was promoted to Sergeant within Traffic section in 1977 and stayed there for a couple of years. He later had assignments in Information & Reception Unit, Zone D and finally in Zone C.
