Lawrence (Larry) John Polansky:
It is with heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, Larry Polansky of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 43 years, Judy; daughters Cora-Lee, and Keri (Ryan); grandsons Grady, Knixon, and Reeve; brothers Ken (Mary-Beth), Jerry (Roberta), Ed (Laurie), Colin (Shelley); sister Lorraine (Frank), and many special nephews, nieces, and extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Victoria, brother, Richard, and Godson, Andy. Larry will be remembered for his numerous good works with the Edmonton Police Department, including the Barney the Safety Bear Program, involvement in Sport Central, and as an inner-city school liaison officer. Those who loved him most treasured his humour, gentle heart, and love of cooking. A Memorial Mass and Celebration of Life was held on Wednesday, January 15th at Fort Saskatchewan). Larry Joined the service on January 6th, 1969 as a member of Class #29. In his career, Larry was assigned to Patrol Divisions ‘D’ and ‘B’, Youth Section, Gaol Section, Tactical Analaysis Unit, Youth Liaison Unit and Education Unit. He made a great impact on many people, particularly younger kids in his many years as Barney the Bear. He retired with Reg. No. 512 on February 28th, 1994.

Frederick (Fred) Pollock:
It is with great sadness that we share the information that EPSVA member Frederick (Fred) Pollock of Edmonton passed away peacefully in his residence at Waterford of Summerlea at the age of 91 years. Fred was a Veteran of the Second World War and served over 30 years with the Edmonton Police Service. Predeceased by his loving wife, Barbara Jean, of sixty years; and son, James Stephen, age 57. Fred is survived by his loving daughters, Patricia Lea MacDonald and Beverley Anne Pollock and their families, including James'. A memorial was held in the spring of 2014. This space was intended for Fred’s EPS historical information but, unfortunately, his file could not be located. EPSVA members Charlie Smith and Roy Larsen knew Fred and from them it was learned his Reg. No. was #52. Fred joined the EPD in November 1948. His assignments included patrol, Traffic and CID and he retired as an Inspector in 1986.

James (Jim) William Stacey:
of Onoway, AB., passed away on December 16, 2013, at the age of 69 years. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Frankey; his children, grandchildren and numerous dear friends. A Funeral Service was held on Monday, December 23, 2013 at Darwell. Interment followed in Darwell Cemetery. If friends desire, memorial tributes may be made to the Charity of one's choice.
Jim Sparks was a member of the Edmonton Police Service from September 16th, 1968 until he retired on December 11th, 1991. At that time his Reg. Number was 469. After graduating from Class #28, Jim was assigned to Patrol Division. Later, he served in Court & Summonse Section, Gaol Section and Court Security Section. He spent the latter part of his career in Identification Section, working in Crime Scenes/Criminal History Units, Evidence processing Detail and Photo Lab Detail.

Harry Detmer ANGELL:
A husband, father and grandpa passed away peacefully on November 27, 2013; he was a Hero to all of us. He leaves to mourn his loving wife, Sandra of 50 years; children, Jeannot, Lorin (Tarynne), Kane; grandchildren, Taylor, Elle; and his mother, Lavine; as well as many relatives and friends. A Celebration of Harry's Life took place on Tuesday December 3, 2013 at Edmonton. Harry ANGELL joined the EPS on September 13th, 1965 as a member of Class #22. During his career, Harry worked in Patrol Divisions, Traffic and Traffic Safety and Communications. Promotion to detective in “A” Division came in 1981. After his promotion, Harry also worked in Youth Detail “A”, Selective Enforcement, Hit & Run and traffic Flow Details. He retired from the service on September 13th, 1991 at which time his Regimental Number was 333.

Don Hendrickson:
It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Don Hendrickson. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Delores; 3 children: Laura, David, Carmen and son-in-law Brent; 3 grandchildren, Curtis, Nicole and Thomas. He was predeceased by his son, Bruce Everitte and grandson, Bruce Justin. Don was born in Calgary, Alberta. During his 35 years of service with the Edmonton Police Service Don received the Medal for Exemplary Service: “Detective risked his life to comfort crashed pilot when a two-engine plane smashed into the Royal Alexandra Hospital.” A memorial service was held on August 8th.
Edmonton Police Department Recruit Training Class # 16 which started on January 17th, 1962, included a young Don Hendrickson. Like most people, his time after training was spent in Patrol Divisions. Don also did a stint as a Constable in Information & Reception. He was promoted to Sergeant in “A” Division in 1976 and later moved back to Information & Reception. In 1981, Don changed ranks to Detective and had a variety of assignments: CIS “D”, Technical Support and Sexual Assault. Reg. No. 246, Detective Hendrickson retired from the service on April 11th, 1997.

Michael (Mike) Thomas:
passed away peacefully on August 14, 2013 at the age of 62 years. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years Evelyn; three daughters Michelle (Kevin), Denise (Darren), Audra (Karmen); two sons Chris (Rhonda) and Mark; nine grandchildren; his father Harold; three sisters and two brothers; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. A Memorial Mass was held at Sherwood Park. Memorial donations may be made to S.T.A.R.S.
Cadet Constable Merrick started his career with the Edmonton Police department on March 16th, 1970. He worked in Case Supervisors Unit while he waited for his opening in Class #34 a year later. After training, Mike went to Patrol and for the next few years rotated between Patrol and Central registry Unit. From 1975 until his retirement on April 11th, 1997, with the exception of a one year stint in Communications Section, Mike spent his time in Patrol Zone/Division “C”. His badge number was 639.

Robert (Bob) John Baker:
It is with heartbreaking sorrow we announce the passing of Bob on July 26, 2013 at the age of 74. He passed peacefully, surrounded by family and friends. He will be forever remembered with love by his wife Jill, daughter Barbara (Richard) of Port Moody, BC, sister-in-law Frances Caldwell, numerous nieces and nephews, special friends Val Stadnyk, Trish Hinchey, Jeanette Dudys and the many friends he made on his journey through life. He was predeceased by his parents Lena and Rupert Baker, brother Ron Baker, brothers- in-law Gerry Caldwell and Dave Zenchyson and sister-in-law Gail Zenchyson. During the last six years Bob put everything he had into his battle with cancer and never lost his unfailing sense of humor. Until the end, he overcame every obstacle this terrible disease put in his path. The family would like to express its gratitude to the Cross Cancer Institute for the never ending support and especially to Dr. Peter Venner and Michelle Lack for their constant care and compassion. A Celebration of Bob's Life was held on, August 2, 2013. Bob Baker got his start with the Edmonton Police Department on April 6th, 1959 and retired 25 years later, on April 6th of 1984. During his career, Bob worked as a uniformed Constable in Patrol, Traffic and Crime Index. He moved to plain clothes assignments in CID in 1971 and was then promoted to Detective in C.I.D. in January 1972. About 2 years later, Bob transferred to Drug Section. After that, Bob spent time in C.I.D. and C.I.S., Headquarters then finished his career as a Detective in B Division, C.I.S.
Bob and Jill moved to BC after his retirement in 1984, where he worked as an Insurance Adjuster for 16 years. They moved back to Edmonton in 2000. He took on a security position with the Alberta Legislative Assembly in 2001, retiring there in 2006. He then worked with Barney Stevens on the Curb the Danger program with the EPS Traffic Section from 2006 to 2012.
